This was precisely what I needed it to be -
a romance-focused Queen's Gambit
. I think I appreciate when books give the character a niche, in this case chess (I have 0 attention span, nor the cognitive flexibility to be constantly shifting focuses). I think there were parts of this that were very predictable, but I went into the book fully expecting that.
