One Perfect Couple
by Ruth Ware
Took a break from my travels through fantasy to read this thriller. I haven’t really been able to get into anything else by this author, but I was intrigued by the premise (I love a good survival story).
One Perfect Couple promises a front row seat to the unraveling of a reality show gone terribly wrong as a devastating storm traps contestants on the tropical island setting for the show. As they band together to take stock of their situation, lines are quickly formed and some contestants prove to be a little stronger than others.
What I Liked:
- I appreciated the fresh setting for this thriller – for once it wasn’t set in suburbia somewhere!
- I appreciate that this book gave voice to victims of.
What I Didn’t:
- I felt the characterizations were very archetypal, without significant depth. There was the meathead, the control freak, etc., and I had hoped for a bit more so that we would care about their peril.
- I was hoping for more survival aspects to this story, but it seemed to boil down to their food and water rationing, and a short segment where they contemplated how to obtain coconuts. I know it’s a thriller, but I guess the setting left me hoping for more depth on the survival front, whereas this was still mostly a thriller on a deserted island.
- The weird easter egg to The Woman in Cabin 10… Come on, you have a character reading another of your books in this one?
- I kept waiting for the big twist, and have to admit, it was ultimately not that big of a twist, and kind of implausible.
