Infinite Jest
by David Foster Wallace
I started reading Infinite Jest when I was 22,the age Tom Bissel said the perfect age to read it.And I finished it now,at 25.
It was the hardest book I've ever read in my 25 years of life. Not only because of Wallace's use of language but also because English is not my mother tongue.
But,the question is,was it worth it?Was it worth the sleepless nights, was it worth waking up 1 hour early so I could read 12 pages before school? And I can say with all my heart and wisdom yes,Infinite Jest worth all that effort.
It showed me things I've never seen before my life.I've never knew depression this closely,I've never knew about the inherent beauty of everyday life. When I was reading I would always remember "This is Water" and DFW's lessons about life.It was a great example of exactly that.
And it was much more. What can I say which hasn't been said before?I loved every bit of it.Especially the characters, and especially Hal.
At first I bought the book as a challenge,I wanted to push myself and I was interested in it,so I bought it,to see if I can get through it.But it ended up being so much more than a challenge. It became my friend. It changed me.It showed me things in a kind and warm way that close friends show you things. It made me who I am today.
