Filthy Lawyer by Whitney G.
3.0
I absolutely adore Reasonable Doubt. It's one of my favorite books and I've been really looking forward to this book. While this gives you a lot of the "feelings" of it and I liked Damien Carter in ways, the story felt underdeveloped. Maybe more like a long novella than novel (in terms of the story development).
The spice is mostly behind doors, which isn't necessarily bad, but it was par for the course. We don't even know the real details in Damien coming to the rescue. We don't even know about some of his clients, which had REALLY interesting moral inclinations. The climax information we find out about Elizabeth was also...vague. I feel like I missed part of the book because I don't understand really how that all happened when there were like 9 others involved. How did one person end up the scapegoat? What is going on with the Sonny Caps condo?!
The characters had a fun meet-cute and then started sleeping together kind of randomly. I like the tension build-up in relationships like this and the chemistry between them had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but it ended up lacking in any actual build-up. It's insta-lust. It's like we got a tiny taste and then we skipped over some of the development and then they started sleeping together all over the place. Maybe partially the story could have had more potential because at the bones, it's Reasonable Doubt again; however, this wasn't executed as well.
I liked Damien overall. He was very much a copy of Andrew Hamilton, except with a slight bend in the law POV. Definitely understand why they work together well. I liked some of his moments with Elizabeth like how he didn't necessarily balk about being more "romantic." Was he a jerk at times? Yes, but he also did some small things that showed he was falling for her.
Elizabeth was interesting and you knew something was a little off with her in the very beginning, but then we find out at the very end what happens. I liked how she worked hard, but we didn't really see much of anything else from her other than her helping Damien. I know Damien came to her rescue, but their make-up I could have used more communication between the two of them.
It's a quick read so it's a good book to read in between other reads. I will read Dirty Judge because I read just about anything from Whitney G, but I think my expectations will be lower than it was for this book.
