After hearing so many great views about this book I decided to pick it up I began reading and at first nothing happened which confused me but I am optimistic. When I made it half way through the book there was I greeted with our main plot point and everything before that felt random . What I will say is that the writing was beautiful, so vivid and compelling, only to be overshadowed by its sheer racism and fat-phobia every other page. It was so unprovoked and entirely distasteful. The book was described as the main character falling into madness but I just didn’t get that she only seemed depressed not mad at all. I was expecting her be belligerent incoherent, fully gone over the deep end. But she simply slipped into a deep depression is all. Even after shock therapy I thought for certain ok this is it she’s gonna take a turn for the worst, but unfortunately I was left with nothing. I don’t really know how to rate this book, I did enjoy it I just feel like so much more could have been done.
Graphic: Fatphobia, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexual assault, Vomit, Suicide attempt
