Interesting, readable, and I learned a fair bit, but it felt too shallow—a piecemeal, obligatory exploration. Too "pop nonfiction" for me. The writer obviously well-suited to his task, though. And the research that must have gone into finding all of the disparate pieces of the puzzle—poems, turn-of-the-century treatises, old maps, etc.—is impressive.

I still might read another from this series.
