Thrawn by Timothy Zahn

3.0

Thrawn isn't a bad novel but I feel like it is suffering somewhat from knowing that there will be more. Different from the initial trilogy because it talks about the growth of Thrawn into the impressive Grand Admiral he is destined to become.

The fish out of water sections with Thrawn are all pretty good as he learns about the differences from his culture and applies what he learns to move himself up the ranks. The one thing that was slightly annoying was that the entire time he has an 'assistant' whom he is training because he sees something in him however he never shows any real aptitude. It is only ever after the facts are pointed out to him does he ever realize what Thrawn is trying to teach him. That character doesn't do it for me.

There is another plot about a character who moves herself up the ranks through Coruscant to become an important governor. Her story has moments where it makes sense but there are a lot of things that just kind of happen and they aren't explained very well. There are parts of the story that maybe should have been dedicated to building those out in a less than obvious way.

While I am interested in seeing where this goes I felt like there were some inconsistencies that made the book a tougher read at some points.
