Nobody writes female friendship like Emily Henry. I seriously don’t know how she continues to write these books that just keep making me laugh and laugh and cry and cry. I read a decent bit of literary fiction but I haven’t read many authors who can write dialogue this way - searingly funny one moment and unbelievably deep at the same(??) moment. The only complaint I will allow about her writing is that the men in her books aren’t particularly believable… I mean come on. A calloused-handed son of Montana ranchers who has been to therapy? It’s basically sci-fi. But I’m still able to catch glimpses of the best men I know in real life and those small truths keeps the characters grounded for me. In conclusion, Emily Henry could write a catalog catalog (listing and describing catalogs, obviously) and I would read the hell out of it, because I would know without a shadow of a doubt that at least two of those catalogs would have a vibrant and varied female friendship and there would be at least one boy catalog who was super broody and whose hair was slightly too long and the main conflict would be because the catalogs couldn’t open up properly to show each other what was inside but eventually they would figure it out and have gorgeous catalog sex okay the metaphor kind of falls apart at the end but you know what I’m saying.
