The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
4.0

“Sometimes I think: if they want to walk around armed and build fences and let a church tell them what to do, let them wallow in it. They can build their own town of closed thinking, and live there, and find out later what a shitty place it really is.”

I can completely understand why the ending of this trilogy might not sit well with readers. There’s a ton more that could have been done with the characters and the plot to make it feel less like the author slammed on the brakes and threw everyone for a loop during the final hundred pages. That said, I read this like my pants were on fire and can appreciate the story and its message for what it was, especially given the state of the world at present. It’s not for everyone, but I’m glad I stuck with it until the very end.
