Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

4.0

I received a copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway and St. Martin's Press. Thank you!

Overall I enjoyed this book and it's insight into Queen Victoria's early years on the throne. I have read and heard so much about her later years and her widowhood that I never gave much thought to how strange and difficult it must have been for her to go from a sheltered young girl to Queen. There were times when I was frustrated with her attitude and her reactions to such situations as the Bedchamber Affair, but she was only 19 after all and entitled to make some mistakes. I was impressed at her aim to rule on her own and learn as much about her job as possible. She was trying to be an independent woman like Queen Elizabeth I, and that must have been very difficult with everyone else running around telling her she needed a man to settle her down and help her rule.

I found that the writing flowed very well, and the author strove to show the major characters from many angles. I could also see Victoria growing and maturing as the book progressed, and it made me like her even more.
