Secrets of a Summer Night
by Lisa Kleypas
The most important thing to know is that I am not a big reader of historical romance. It isn't a sub-genre that I typically gravitate towards and I'm navigating my way around finding some authors that I would like. I've heard a lot of Lisa Kleypas and decided to go for her Wallflower series and it did not disappoint.
Secrets of a Summer Night focuses on Annabelle who is searching for a husband; however, there are certain elements about her family circumstances that prevent this from happening. At a ball, Annabelle befriends three other women who are also considered wallflowers. Together they make a pact that they would do everything they could to support each other in finding suitable husbands. At this same ball, readers are introduced to the infamous Simon Hunt who clearly has an attraction for Annabelle, but does believe in the idea of marriage. One of my favorite things about this novel was definitely the relationship that was developed between Annabelle and the other three women. It felt genuine and real. And watching the way that they interacted made me even more excited for the next books in the series. It was also great watching the banter between Annabelle and Simon. Simon was completely swoon worthy and there were several moments that I found myself laughing out loud. In reading this book, I also learned that I am a fan of historical romances that give readers insight to the relationship after the HEA. I thought that I was going to find this part of the novel to be slow, but I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Simon and Annabelle continue to develop even after they found their way to each other.
I think that I would have rated this a little higher; however, Annabelle is definitely a character that can be difficult to relate to. She gives off an air of being stuck up during certain scenes. While I was empathetic to her circumstances, it was difficult to connect to her in some situations. Overall, I must say that I did enjoy my read of this and can't wait to pick up the next books in the series. This was a good example of a relationship that developed over time. If you're looking for a new historical romance series to check out, I would definitely recommend considering this one.
