Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher

This short epistolary novel is very funny. All the letters come from a curmudgeonly English professor, Jay Fitger. He writes letters of recommendation, he asks for favors, he responses to requests, he complains, he describes.

Along the way, we get to hear what the students in his creative writing class come up with, and what kind of weird jobs they’re applying for. And we learn Jay’s romantic history, since his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend work in academia as well. And we wonder if the construction project in his building will ever be finished, whether it will ever be safe to breathe again. And we have a feeling that the English department is slowly being killed off by the University, anyway.
