The Survivors Club
by Lisa Gardner
I adore Lisa Gardner's character work & this book contains so many great characters. Jillian (who is fiercely loyal), Meg (who is sweet and kind), Griffin (who is earnest and brooding)... so many lovable characters whose interactions are endearing and entertaining and funny. So in terms of the character work, this novel is a fantastic read! Plus, it's a fairly long book, so I was glad to be able to spend a considerable amount of time with these characters.
In terms of the plot: honestly, it was pretty unsurprising. For example, the prologue opens with two unknown characters discussing methods to rape women while avoiding detection and detainment by police, s0 readers know the rapist that is active throughout the novel has an accomplice/friend who knows his methods/identity, and therefore, it's very unsurprising when readers learn that "Eddie" is still taking new victims even after his death. Also, there were many ideas explored by police throughout the novel to solve the mystery (red herrings, etc), but by the end of the novel, a couple of those felt like unaddressed loose ends. For example, at the end of one chapter (I don't remember which), the LT suggests that Griffin contact certain help lines to see if the rapist hurt any other rape victims who did not file a police report, and readers never learn the outcome of those phone calls. And the ending... well, a bit of suspension of disbelief is necessary. Especially since the characters figure out the identity of the rapist on a whim... just a bunch of sudden "Ah-ha!" moments for both Griffin and Jillian that enable them to solve the mystery.
Regardless, Gardner's writing is great as always and this book is another fun (and funny!) read. For these reasons, I enjoyed it just as much of many of her more popular books.
