Bakuman., Volume 1 by Takeshi Obata, Tsugumi Ohba
3.0
Both my daughter and I love reading manga and on one of the more recent library trips we randomly picked a few that looked interesting. From what I can tell, she's been loving this one. After she finished the series I decided to read Bakuman as well.
While the story in itself is really interesting, i.e. if you're interested in slice-of-life stories and in particular how manga are created, I found the attitude of Akito Takagi - one of the main protagonists - to be extremely sexist. This wasn't done in a way to show that he has a disturbing view of women in general, but seems to be partially the message of the story itself. Smart women who know they are smart aren't attractive and other gems like this make you want to smack the mangaka with a trout.
Now that I've read the first volume I'm going to have a chat with our daughter, because obviously that's not the kind of message I want her to adhere to. Reading mangas together means we have a common passion, but it also gives us an opportunity to talk about many of the things that are simply wrong in them: misogyny, sexism, portraying girls and women as sexual objects, and the list goes on.
