La virgen de los sicarios by Fernando Vallejo

4.0

What a triumph! This was such a compelling read; Vallejo paints such an excruciatingly horrifying image of what life was like at the height of the sicario control in Medellín in the 90s and the shocking brutality that was ever present. The mystery surrounding the narrator and his relationship with Alexis was so fascinating, as was the narrator’s harsh and controversial views about poverty and gang warfare. I also found some of the moments of dark humour particularly smart and biting, as well as some of the grotesque and ghastly moral quandaries and hypocrisies that are set into motion within the novella.
