Erica Skyberg has always known that something was off - it only took 35 years to realize that they are trans. But living in Mitchell, South Dakota and working as a high school teacher makes Erica hesitant to share this aspect about themselves until Abigail Hawkes, the high school's 'trans girl' ends up in one of their classes.
Erica decides to open up to Abigail and Abigail reluctantly take on the role of Erica's 'trans mom' to answer questions and be a sounding board for all these uncertainties. But to others, their friendship raises suspicions and they soon have to balance those along with trying to figure out how and what to share about their true selves.
I loved how we never learned Erica's deadname and how they made the static noise whenever it was said by others who didn't know her true self.
