This is one of the great works in graphic novel fiction, and I’m so glad I’ve finally been able to read it. A superhero story told on a biblical scale and allegory, complete with the heroes perceiving themselves as gods and the grandness of Alex Ross’ paintings elevating them to that as well. There is so much here, about the nature of responsibility in the face of world changing power, but also of the power of humanity to hope. A seminal work in the medium, and that feeling comes across from every page.
