Although I did not read the first in this series, I don't feel like I missed anything at all. It definitely reads as a stand-alone novel.
It took a bit to get into the book but once I did, I really enjoyed it. I think it was more my mindset going into it than any issue with the book. It was a good mystery and I enjoyed the premise.
