4.5

Ok so after a failed start earlier, I decided to start reading this two days before it was due back at the library (classic) and I had much more success this time.

I had a fantastic time reading this, the writing style/character voice is nothing quite like anything I have read before and the world building, magic system and lore were so goddamn fascinating - especially learning about it from the perspective and with the biases of Kinch. The characters were also excellent, I greatly enjoyed the dynamics and unspoken/spoken relationships and such.

This gave me just absolutely fantastic vibes, the shenanigans and absolutely awesome combats and encounters that happened and how different people reacted and everything. Just so goddamn neat.

So I just found out that this is not actually a standalone but the first in a series! Thank the lords, I was going to say it felt like the ending was setting up for another book but I wasn't sure so I checked and huzzah! More shenanigans and lore and stuff to come!

Also I have to mention that while I didn't cry during this book, I did tear up a little reading the acknowledgement to Luther. Goddamn.

2024 reread
After the absolutely harrowing and beautiful read that was The Daughter's War, I was looking forward to re-entering this world and rediscovering (thanks to my not incredible memory when it comes to books) what happens next. This was a delightful reread, I loved the depth that the knowledge of The Daughters' War added to this story and I loved how different Kinch's perspective and tone and priorities were, it made for a nice change. Once again, I didn't cry but I certainly teared up more often with Galva's moments and felt a lot more emotion.

This is simply such a wonderfully adventurous and dense world which feels so full of shenanigans and horrors and humanity and I cannot wait to see more of it in the future.

I also feel like I should say that having just finished playing Dragon Age: Origins for the first time and having fallen absolutely in love with Morrigan, I felt that Norrigal's story and character were similar enough to Morrigan for me to be delighted. I hope that Kinch and Norrigal do get to reunite, and my god that Deadlegs reveal thing was *chefs kiss*
