Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb

5.0

I loved damn near everything about this series: from the slow burn romance, the slowly unfolding of answers to big questions posed early on, the magic and world building, and especially the people who live in this world.

I think about Robin Hobb’s greatest strength, which in my opinion is her character work. As immersive as her world building is, her characters always seem to give me so much to think about. I enjoy how we often get to see the characters day to day lives, switching between multiple POV’s, increasing the suspense as to how all these vastly different story lines will eventually meet up.

These are characters that will infuriate you, endear you to themselves, and drive you wild with curiosity. Robin Hobb’s mastery of building suspense, her excellent pacing (not so slow as The Farseer Trilogy seemed to me but I loved it nonetheless), and her ability to bring you along as characters allow themselves to be changed and change the world around them.
