Character
I commend Cusk for her ability to write the longest sentences I've ever read, yet still have them make logical sense. Because of this, the book was a breeze to get through. The reading experience was similar to how I felt reading Hangman by Maya Binyam, minus the surreal aspects of Binyam's books. Each person the protagonist meets shares their life story, therefore their unique perspective on living, which makes it feel like the reader is encountering people they've met before. I appreciated the honesty and truthfulness the main character bestows on those she meets. She is never untrue to herself, even if she is supposed to be a somewhat passive vessel for the reader. Interested to see what the next book in the trilogy, Transit, does.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Misogyny
Minor: Child abuse, Eating disorder, Forced institutionalization, Sexual harassment
