Fault Line

Yes! This is a solid 4-star rating for me. I think I fell in love with Holden Becker.

While we do see some of the characters from [b:Spring Tide|63930478|Spring Tide (Coastal University #1)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1670192592l/63930478._SY75_.jpg|98879936], I actually consider it a spin-off of Spring Tide. Why? Well, we originally met Luca and Harper at Coastal University. Luca has multiple siblings, his only brother is Elio. Luca also has an ex-girlfriend named Sofia. [b:Fault Line|123816203|Fault Line (Coastal University #2)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1680523646l/123816203._SY75_.jpg|144274372] follows the story of Kaia, Sofia's sister, who also happens to be Elio's best friend. So yes, while the story is linked to Luca, it doesn't follow your typical series dynamic of teammates/roommates/best friends or siblings - at least not directly.
Here we have Kaia, 4 years after the end of [b:Spring Tide|63930478|Spring Tide (Coastal University #1)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1670192592l/63930478._SY75_.jpg|98879936]. She is studying to be a biomechanical engineer. For the past 3 years, she has been in multiple classes with Holden Becker, who is studying for the same degree. They have been classroom rivals and get on each other's nerves. For Kaia, Beck is her academic rival who she hates. For Beck, Kai is the classmate he likes to rial up and banter with. It's his form of foreplay. It's now senior year and both Kaia and Holden are applying for the same advisor. Holden is also a hockey player and is hoping to be drafted by the NHL after he finishes school, however, he needs a back-up degree in case his professional athletic dream doesn't come true. He's a smart cookie and school comes easier to him. Not to mention, Holden has money and his parents have great connections. Kaia is also smart but she puts her time and dedication into studying and preparing herself for success.
Holden has always had a little crush on Kaia but thought she was in a relationship with Elio so he never pursued her outside of flirting and banter. That is until he learns that Elio is only Kaia's BFF. Now, Holden has his sights set on Kaia for something more. Lucky for him, Kaia is looking for some stress relief. Kaia is a ball of anxiety, OCD, and much more. Previously, she would self-medicate to get through her day, but that led to an addiction, and she has since learned other coping mechanisms. That doesn't mean that life doesn't sometimes become overwhelming and she needs to destress...to help her sleep. While she is looking for a hookup, Holden can't help to cockblock her at every corner, eventually offering his services to Kaia for that much-needed stress relief. And so, the mutual booty-call friendship begins, but for Holden, it's just not enough. He wants more and has always wanted more. He knows that his schedule is too hectic for a relationship, but that doesn't mean that he can't try to make the most of the situation. Kaia is hesitant that her addictive past will be too much for Holden if he finds out.
Together, Holden and Kaia navigate the future they could have together is she just learns to trust and open up. Kaia learns that she can let go and that Holden will be there to catch her. Holden, in the meantime, needs to learn to stand up for what he wants and demand the future he wants.
This is a lovely story where Kaia has a lot of mental health issues, compulsory tendencies of self-harm, and low self-esteem. The friendship she has with Elio is so heartwarming, but it is beautiful to see how she allows someone new into her life to help share the burden of her stress. Holden is a 10-star boyfriend.
