Want You Back
by Annabeth Albert
Want You Back by Annabeth Albert is a sweet romance follows Maverick and Colt, who were best friends and each other's first loves but were driven apart by choice and circumstance. Now, the death of Mav's estranged father brings him back to Lovelorn to deal with the ranch, reuniting him with Colt. As they reconnect, Mav must decide if he can let go of his resentment and Colt must decide if he can ask Mav to stay.
I loved the steady build of Colt and Mav's relationship through the past timeline and into the present. The three-part structure keeps the flashbacks to the first third, which I appreciated. I loved that we got that context for them as kids, and it felt so real how they couldn't push past the fact that Mav needed to leave Lovelorn and Colt needed to stay. The rest of the book follows their second chance, with Colt having to learn to trust, and Mav learning to move forward and look past the bad memories of his father.
It was sweet how quickly Colt and Mav fall back into caring for and wanting each other. Colt is used to putting everyone else's needs ahead of himself, but Mav is so great at supporting him and demanding Colt make room for himself. Colt is also there for Mav, helping him support his niece though a tough time. I loved that they both had a past but they didn't let that affect their future. And the demisexual representation was so appreciated!
This book does deal with parental neglect, alcoholism, and past deaths of family members, and an off-page car accident, so tread carefully if those are trigger for you.
Rating: 4/5
*I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
