Star Wars: Kanan, Vol. 2: First Blood by Greg Weisman

3.0

The flashback is complete as Greg Weisman brings the 12-issue exploration of Kanan's Jedi past to its conclusion here, with another look at Kanan's time in the Jedi order and the adventures he has while learning of his opportunity to become Depa Bilaba's Padawan. As with Vol. 1, the arc is broken up into two sections: a 5-issue arc that deals with Kanan's young life, and a sixth epilogue issue that satisfies the context of the the flashback.

This time around, the story takes us back to where issue #1 began, a sort of flashback of the flashback, and ultimately gets to the point at which Kanan's adventures as a Padawan began. We see him dealing with the stressors of Jedi training, of the adversity he goes through as a lesser candidate, and of the dangers to the Jedi Temple during the Clone Wars, and that makes for an interesting, if character-light, story to explore. The action is steady and as the story changes locations to begin the tie-in to the beginning of the series with the Kaller story, it gets a little strained and hurried. Larraz's art begins to look more and more anime-y and goofy, but the story begins to connect to other media (specifically the TV show and novels) in expert form, which for me made it worth seeing through to the end.

There's nothing here to recommend this as an absolute day 1 purchase (I'm reading it in single issues), but it's a good Star Wars tale and good for completionists and fans of Star Wars Rebels, and will make a nice read for those who are looking for more stories about the Clone Wars era in this age of reliving the original trilogy and building the context for the new one.
