The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

4.0

Good story, and I look forward to re-reading the rest of the series.

I would mainly like to offer a counterpoint to all the reviews I read saying that this was nothing more than Lord of the Rings for kids, that the stories were so similar as to make reading this series unnecessay. Yes, Gurgi's speech patterns are markedly similar to Gollum's. Yes, the gwythaints are reminiscent of the ring wraiths. But Gurgi's character takes a completely different direction, and please, people, any further similarities cannot be credited to Tolkein.

Bad guys? Good guys? Muddling, young, inexperienced hero? Wise, battleworn and/or magical guides and teachers? Disguised royalty? A quest?

It's not Tolkein, it's Story.
