The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
3.0

Prior to reading this book, I was vaguely aware of the plot. Martians from Mars land upon Earth and wreck havoc upon London. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself reading a discussion on the scientific plausibility of aliens physically existing on Earth and a philosophical analysis of humanity. The first person narrative gave some grounding to this discussion; it made these conversations feel immediate and relevant. This was reiterated though the way in which Wells wrote about the warring between humans and the aliens. The physical action of war wasn't the primary focus. Most discussion of conflict was observed through the narrator. He engaged in some fighting, but not with the invading species. Knowing that this book was written over 100 years ago only makes me appreciate the novelty of this story more and consider the bigger impact it must have had on contemporary readers.
