What It Was by Grayce Rian

5.0

This is a story of how McKenna and Griffin fall hopelessly in love with one another but as tragedy hits, grief tears them apart. Two years later, Griffin and McKenna realize that there was not only hurt and grief between the two of them, but also several misunderstandings. Can they find their way back to becoming the best friends they once were? Is their love enough to heal their broken hearts?

What It Was is Grayce Rian’s debut novel, and I personally feel like she knocks it out of the park with this story. I went into this thinking it would be more of a steamy forbidden romance because of the best friend’s brother trope, but this is definitely an emotional second chance romance. I laughed, cried, and swooned while reading this story. The characters are so easy to love, and the banter is hilarious. Not to mention, Griffin can dirty talk!! I love the chemistry that he and McKenna have, and watching Griffin fall apart was heartbreaking.

Something that truly made this a 5 star read for me was the representation of the different ways people cope with grief, and the open discussions on therapy that you read. It truly shows that grief isn’t always linear.

This is a quick read - I read it all in one sitting! I definitely will be on the lookout for more of Grayce’s books. I also appreciate the fact that we got not only an epilogue but an extended one as well! It really made Griffin and McKenna’s story feel complete.
