Miramar by Naguib Mahfouz, Fatma Moussa Mahmoud

4.0

This is really a short story, retold from the point of view of different main characters. When I realized that was what it was going to be, I was disappointed at first since I mistakenly thought I knew (in effect) how the story comes out. Each retelling by a different characters adds to the telling of the outcome as well as difference perspectives to the events building to that end - it's extremely clever.

The story is quite depressing and since Mahfouz tells it so well, that effect is multiplied. Not light entertainment reading, I think.
