It's so 2010s Wattpad angst, but it got me so hooked and I could not put it down. There were points where the dialogue was so dramatic and the description was a bit too "this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened, etc" (especially when describing the Exy game), but it was such a blast reading it. Everyone is dysfunctional and has problems, and I'm so invested in watching this hot mess of a found family.
I will say though, there are some moments that I wished had more focus or resolution. For example,Nicky forcibly kissing Neil after drugging him ; that's sexual assault and there was an apology, but I feel like the apology was more about going along with Andrew and not about That. Like, the kissing was not necessary to perform whatever psychological torture thing they were going for. To be fair though, Neil doesn't accept the apology. So I'm hoping that this will come back in the later books and be addressed before Neil actually accepts being part of the pseudo-family he's seemingly found himself in.
I will say though, there are some moments that I wished had more focus or resolution. For example,
Moderate: Drug abuse, Drug use
Minor: Homophobia, Sexual assault
The f-slur is used at least once.
