A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
5.0
A brilliant congregation of history, drama and wit. The overlaying theme of death hauntingly adds to bring out the plot's complexity and culminate to a thematic climax. Although, the ancient connections between the central characters come as just too convenient at times. One thing I'd like to change in the story(if I could) is that I'd switch Madame Defarge's death with that of Miss Pross. I feel it'd have set to concrete the theme of the Reign of Terror that it spared no one, not even the innocents. The best two elements of the novel are wit -that mocks the atrocities of the aristocrats as well as amplifies the desperation of the downtrodden- and character development which is successful in bringing the plot to a full circle. Dickens' ability to craft out a piece of work that perfectly embodies the French Revolution's spirit & effect diluted with that of the lives of an afflicted family puts him on a par with the best of the times.
