Ask the Passengers by A.S. King
3.0

release date -- October 23rd

I wanted to like this more than I did because I really liked [Everybody Sees The Ants] but the thing with Socrates showing up and the conversations she was having at (at not with) the airplane passengers sounded similar to Lucky's conversations with his dead grandfather and the ants who acted as a Greek Chorus. Also I had trouble telling at times what the time period of the book was. The names and perhaps some of the situations felt very late 1980s early 1990s but she said they are in 2011 and they have cell phones. On the other hand, I blew through this book in a day with a toddler in the house.

"We only want to know you're okay, and if you're lying to us, then we don't know where you are." He takes a bite of his chow neon and adds , mouth full and noodle hanging out one side, "both geographically and metaphysically, you know? 186

Notes from Mock Printz discussion: if she gives all her love away no one can control it. Nice to see her struggling with her sexuality instead of just knowing. Feel the moment of the passenger's story (turning point moments in their lives). She gave us a full family, and friends, and teachers and strangers to care about. No one in the book brought up the fact that she might be bisexual.
