The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
5.0
This was an amazing, must read book. I listened to it on audio, and if you like audiobooks, please give this one a try, the narrator is amazing.
The main strength of this book is the way the author weaves multifaceted and believable characters throughout the story. These characters play vital roles in the central plot centered on race relations, but also in the sub plots which primarily center around relationships (family, friends, and romantic).
The book manages to touch on so many different issues, but rather then stating "This is why this is a problem" the author shows us. This range from income inequality, race (not just blackness either), interracial couples, and so many other things.
Characters like Devonte, could have easily been one dimensional, and poorly thought out; however, due to the powerful writing he ends up a well rounded and great addition to the story, more then just the reformed gangster.
I cannot recommend this book enough!
