sentimental but not saccharine, the epic highs and lows of a 30 year boygirl friendship. the prose may be pretentious and purple but the characters are such creatures of pomp and self-aggrandising cerebrality that it ultimately fits better than anything else could. it definitely operates in cliche and melodrama but zevins hand is deft enough that it doesnt drag the story into the dullards realm. for the most part.
unfortunately zevin's zionism is quite visible in the text, and the arc of the character it creates only concludes in making our main female lead look strange and unfamiliar by the story's conclusion.
why does her relationship crater irreparably over a man she still speaks calmly to 20 years later. why does zevin feel the urge to push the fallout of that man onto the direct consequence of his influence in her life but then treat that consequence like it is wholly separate from him and thus can be laid at Sam's feet. an odd decision all around that appears to me an attempt to soften the blow of the only Israeli being a veritable sack of shit. aw well. I don't know her.
a light read recommended to those who have been out of the book loop for a minute n need smthn to ease their way back in. 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
