Sipping Dom Pérignon Through a Straw by Eddie Ndopu
4.0
Ndobu is both a fascinating character and narrator and I'm so grateful to listen to his story in his voice. He wrote the book with his one good finger. In this book, whose title comes from a passerby on a plane, he recounts his struggles as an Oxford masters' student. He received a scholarship but faced physical and financial barriers in an inaccessible campus, and in paying for his care aids. He also was faced with navigating UK worker safety regulations requiring more aids than he anticipated should he want to be lifted vs. use of the hoist. While Oxford supported him, they also placed additional road blocks in his way, including a donor's promise to help offset his fundraising. Ndopu also shares snippets from his time at the ALA, at undergrad in Canada and as a child as his SMA progressed. An excellent listen.
