A Very Merry Bromance
by Lyssa Kay Adams
What a fun book for the holidays. I have really liked Colton in the previous stories in this series as a side character. He has been wonderful, so I couldn't wait to see what Lyssa Kay Adams came up with for his story. Gretchen was briefly a part of another Bromance book, dumping Mac but other than that we didn't know much about her.
Colton and Gretchen spent a beautiful night together after on of the couples weddings. Colton thought everything went fantastically and couldn't wait to spend more time with Gretchen getting to know her. So he was extremely disappointed when she start picking up all of her stuff to leave. Colton is used to women throwing themselves at him not trying to lock one down into a date. It will be about a year later before these two have a reason to be in each other's lives again.
Gretchen comes from a family of rich and horrible people. They are the long time owners for a Whiskey empire now run mostly by Gretchen's brother. He wants her to use her friendship connections to convince Colton to be the new face of one of their brands. Her brother has even dangled the one thing Gretchen craves, a spot on the charity board, to entice her. She has spent so long avoiding Colton, but for this she will risk seeing the man she ran away from.
Colton has lost his groove. His songs are suffering, he hasn't really dated since that botched morning after with Gretchen and he is in a really strange spot in his life. The last thing he really wants to do is to be the "Face" for a whiskey brand, but if he can spend some time with Gretchen and make it past some of her defenses it will be worth it. Step one, go on a few dates, business outings, with Gretchen and discuss the offer. Step two, try to get her into the holiday spirit since she seems like a bit of a scrooge and Step three, hold on tight when she runs, because that is what she does.
I liked Gretchen overall. It is clear she is so broken, lonely and closed off so she won't get hurt. Colton is all love and happiness just trying to find that perfect someone to share a life with. It is hard not to love a character full of sunshine and protectiveness. As we learn more about both their pasts it is easy to see why they are really perfect for each other. Gretchen has never had someone really stand strong and take her side before Colton. Colton on the other hand needs someone who understands what it is like to have a singular focus when inspiration hits and he gets lost in his music. They both will need to deal with their pasts to have any kind of future.
This was a cute story. There was a little too much emphasis on possibly on some of the aspects of Gretchen's job trying to help those that came into the country illegally not get deported. Look I'm all for not breaking up families but also I'm for coming into the United States legally. Still she was passionate about what she was doing and it made her a more likable person under all the spikiness she gives off to those around her.
Overall a few cute and happy little Christmas story.
