Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats

I don't have very much to say about this book other than "read it!" Gustafson does an incredible job of tugging at the reader's heartstrings, at imbuing them with love, fear, gratitude, grief, and above all else, hope. Despite having little in common with the author on paper, I found her writing deeply relatable, and she made it easy to empathize even about things I had never come close to experiencing. And not just things in her own life, but in the lives of others, too. This book provides a deeply kind and caring view of even the initially mean and aggressive people featured in it. As much as this memoir is about cats, it's also about humans and our connections to everything and everyone around us. It's about community and care. It's about what it means to be whole and safe. And it's about all of that without coming across as pretentious or holier-than-thou. The cat illustrations before each essay are a nice bonus too :) Unless you're sensitive to topics such as animal death and illness, I definitely recommend reading this.
