Myers by Zepphora

dark mysterious tense fast-paced

4.5

I was hooked from the beginning. There is so much murder and so much anger but all for a good reason, at least that is what Damien King thinks. This kid had so much responsibility and was treated absolutely shitty. Horrible things happened to him but yet he still showed up for Trixie and took the best care of her that he could at 12 years old. Trixie started staying at their house when she was an infant and he was 8. His step sister was supposed to be the one to watch her but she didn’t, he did.  The book time jumps 14 years. At times I felt like I might throw up, it was that brutal. I don’t read a lot of horror for this reason but this novella sounded too good to pass up. I also have never read anything by this author. I felt like I was watching a movie the whole time. One thing I did have an issue with will be in the play by play spoilers. I’m not so sure finishing this book before bed was a good idea but I was too far in to stop for the night  If you are a fan of Michael Meyers and Halloween, like gory detailed scenes, don’t care if the cops are ignorant, and don’t mind age gap then pick this one up.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This is for the people who want to know what happens but can’t read the gory details. I got you!! Book starts out with Damien caring for Trixie who is 4. Damien lives with his step sister because their parents have died and they also watch Trixie because her parents are always traveling for work. Damien had a good life up until his mom died and now he is being “cared” for by Samantha his step sister. She is awful. She abuses him in ALL the ways. Halloween rolls around and Samantha is having friends over so Damien dresses up with Trixie and takes her out. When I tell you Damien does everything for this little girl, I mean it. He wakes up and takes care of her, goes to school and comes home at his lunch to check on her and then comes home after school and tends to her. Samantha was jealous of Trixie when she was there all the time because Damien was so protective over her. Damien takes Trixie to the park after trick or treating and 3 boys from his school approach them. They are asking if Trixie was Damien’s sister and saying how when she grows up she will he the town whore because he’s a freak and his step sister is a pedo. Then takes Trixie candy bucket and makes her cry. Damien loses it and takes the knife out of his pocket and kills them. Trixie watched it all and he was so worried she would be scared but once it was done she walked over and kissed his cheek and took her candy and they walked off. Completely unhinged!!! They get home and he takes her upstairs to give her a bath and get her into bed. All of Samantha’s friends are there and he was so angry. The next chapter is him dropping the knife by Samantha’s body. He killed them all. Later in the book they go into detail about what she looked like and it was awful. Anyways, the cops show up and he’s holding Trixie about to give her another bath and this is where I start to question if these cops are real they say something along the lines like “oh son you two need to get out of here this is now a crime scene” THEY ARE COVERED IN BLOOD. I’m pretty sure they know what happened. Finally they realize it and Trixie goes back to her parents and he is taken into custody. For the next 14 years he doesn’t speak, he’s moved from psych ward to prison cell, he’s killed over 100 people and he has NEVER stopped thinking about Trixie. To the point that his whole cell or room (wherever he is) is covered in Trixie’s name.

TIME JUMPS 14 YEARS:

Damien hurts the guard who he just so happened to know from school back in the day. Steals his clothes and flees the place he’s in. Guess where he is going? You guessed it, back home to find Trixie.

Trixie was put back with her parents and they realized without “Samantha’s” help they couldn’t be a parent and put her up for adoption. I couldn’t believe that when I read it. Trixie gets adopted by Lieutenant Henry and his wife and her name is now Aurora. Henry knows about the case and knows he needs to keep Aurora safe now that Damien is back on the streets. He knows that Damien will come looking for her and he thinks it will be kill Aurora (Trixie). Aurora is obsessed with crime and gets off on murders and seeing their bodies. She looks up crime scene photos and gets off on them. While at school (I think) a few girls are being mean to her and her backpack falls and guess who is behind her picking it up and handing it to her? Damien. She is captivated by his eyes and his all around presence.  Her friends always make fun of her for not having a man but she wants someone who is obsessed with her and who would kill for her and she just hasn’t found that yet. Or has she? Aurora is talking to Damien but he won’t talk back and she finds that odd. What I found odd was that she knew Damien was mute now but never put two and two together that he is him. Her friends show up and she asks if they saw the guy and one said no but the other said yes and that he was hot. Aurora thinks he is in his early 20’s so maybe that’s why she didn’t think it was Damien since he is 26. While Damien was stalking her house he overhears some guys talking about a party they are having and how Aurora had to come. He had plans to fuck her and I’m pretty sure let everyone else do it too. Damien obviously doesn’t like that and kills him. Fast forwards to the Fall Festival and Aurora is there with her friends. Damien shows up and they go off and sit on a bench together. One thing leads to another and they start making out and her dad shows up. Explain to me why this Lieutenant sees a strange man, who fits the dudes description that they are looking for, sitting next to his daughter and never questions it. Actually starts talking about how she knows this murderer is out there and she needs to get home. He also has eyes on her at all times and the house being watched by cops so explain to me how they never saw them sitting together or him sneaking into her bedroom window. You read that right he has snuck into her room, more than once. They even had sex and he took her virginity. I’m just so confused at how he’s able to do all this while there is a literal manhunt out for this man. Mind boggling.  Halloween night he’s planning on killing all the people who have wronged her and kept him from her. He killed her birth parents when he got to the town while he was looking for her. He killed the girl’s who bullied her. I’m trying to remember the order this all went in but it doesn’t matter. Also, he has never had to run from the police during this whole book, this town doesn’t seem large so how he is able to go into these houses and kill and torture all these people. He even stays in the house he grew up in. Like wouldn’t they look there? Have it surrounded or watched at all times. It’s laughable. Well he ends up taking her dad and mom to the house and kills the mom and ties up the dad. He takes Aurora back with him to the house and as she was there she listens to a voicemail from her mom explaining to her that she is Trixie and she needs to pack up and drive far away from that place. Aurora is mad and after seeing all the bodies of people who’s wronged her they have sex and then she goes to the basement where her dad is. She ends up killing him and tells Damien that if he can kill for her she wants to show her love and kill for him too. The end.
