Fire by Kristin Cashore

adventurous dark mysterious slow-paced

3.25

If you’re interested in reading about periods (through Fire’s pov) and pregnancy (through side characters) in fantasy, Fire is for you.

What I liked:
-The fact that we get to see more of Leck’s backstory
-the physical disabilities and chronic illness representation
-Fire’s passion for music
-Fire and Brigin’s fondness for horses
-The message that people are complex, not just good or evil
-Women are able to take birth control/pregnancy prevention herbs, and even abortion herbs as well. I liked that women were allowed to have this control.
-We get introduced to many characters, yet they were all fleshed out well.

Fire longs to be a mother, and grieves over the fact that she cannot due to the circumstances. I could not relate at all, but I do like how she bonds with children. I feel like sometimes our society assumes childless people hate children, which may be true for some but not all.

What I wasn’t a fan of:
-The slow pace
-Because Fire is an alluring human monster, she very frequently has to fight off unwanted sexual advances. This is the disturbing reality that many women have to face, but it made the book so bleak. The war, with all the death and injuries, was also a sobering factor. It is mentioned a few times that one character released a prisoner to rape someone’s wife.
-Fire’s powers are very similar to Leck’s Grace. I guess it could be to show how two people with similar abilities can be different? It just didn’t hit for me
