If I Tell You the Truth by Jasmin Kaur

5.0

This book was incredible. The story of a mother who is forced to flee her home in Punjab. She's headed to college in Canada, however, she holds a secret that once out, changes her life forever. The story is also told from the pov from the perspective of Kiran's daughter, Sahaara, and her path to discovering herself, her own identity and helping her mother discover her voice. The story is told through poetry/prose/illustrations. The story runs the gamut from sexual assault, police brutality, immigration trauma and struggles, domestic violence, alcoholism, depression & anxiety. There is a love story that brews throughout the story and doesn't overshine/detract from the story. I could not put this book down. I read it late into the night. I cheered, cried and laughed along with Kiran and Sahaara. Definitely one for the library collection.
