Dancer from the Dance by Andrew Holleran
4.0

I gave this four stars instead of five because it’s hard to keep track of all the characters who aren’t Malone and Sutherland which I guess is the point… but like, there’s nothing online about anybody but those two and our ominous narrator.

I see myself in Malone. I see myself in the narrator. As a gay who lived in New York for a decade and is clamoring to move back, this truly hurt my soul. I see my friends in this. I see a lot of gay culture still revolving the way this novel does.

Some of it is dated as hell and borderline racist, but a period piece is a period piece and the language is at least a bit more appropriate instead of really bad? Idk. These gays fetishized or discriminated against non white men a lot.

Overall I say this is a great look into gay life in New York post Stonewall, pre-AIDS, and pre-Party Monster.
