Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins
4.0

I’m of two minds when I think about what I thought about this book.

On one hand, a fluffy, enemies-to-lovers, female-female, royal romance? SIGN ME UP! This is a super tropy and quick read and I want more stories like this because it’s cute and queer without a ton a angst. I could have only wished for a story like when when I was a teenager.

On the other hand, the pacing of this felt really wrong and the ending happened too quickly. Too much time was spent on the Millie’s Texas friends since they don’t end up playing much of a role in this story. I guess Jude’s betrayal is important but that could have been relayed in a quick flashback. I didn’t need to know those characters. (Sorry, Lee. You seem like a sweetheart). And the boarding school mean girls, Caroline and Ilse, didn’t bring much to this story either. Too much time was wasted on these characters and not enough with Millie and Fiona.

And while Millie and Fiona are cute and I like that they seem to like each other for the qualities—good and bad—they both inhabit, they went from enemies to friends to girlfriends to I-love-you very quickly.

3.5 stars. I’m rounding up for the gift of the premise and the happy ending.
