The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

4.0

The Awakening leaves off right were The Summoning left off. Chloe and Rae are trapped by the Edison Group after the two of them sought out Chloe’s aunt for help. Betrayed by the one person she thought she could trust, Chloe now has made it her mission to find out exactly what the Edison Group are up to, and escape. Chloe is no ordinary teenager, up until a few weeks ago she had been going to a normal high school and living an average life. Now though, Chloe has learned she is a necromancer; she can see and contact the dead.

With the help from a dead former roommate from the last book named Liz, Chloe and her least likely ally Tori (who is a witch), escape the Edison Group and meet up with Simon, a warlock, and Derek, a werewolf. Rae refuses to leave after she starts to get good treatment by Dr. Davidoff and after she’s learned that she is part demon. The boys had been in hiding ever since Lauren, Chloe’s aunt, turned in Rae and Chloe. Now, they must find Simon and Derek’s father to get some answers and figure out what the Edison Group really wants from them, and it proves to be no easy task.

All the while, Chloe is trying to learn how to harness her power and at times she finds herself calling to dead things that she did not mean to bring around in the first place. In the first book, readers really start to sense a romance between Simon and Chloe and during this book, the romance starts to grow between Chloe and Derek. Only with the final book in the trilogy will things really come to a head.

I enjoyed The Awakening on a whole, but I really cannot wait until the third book comes out to find out what will happen with each teen. What I liked most about this book was that it picked up right where the first left off, which is refreshing because a lot of the time books will leave gaps in between. I also liked the fact that this book was more about understanding each character and their powers and seeing how they are growing into those powers. There is nonstop excitement and drama throughout. I would recommend that teens read The Awakening first before starting this one, but they will be filled in enough by this book that they could start with this one if need be. For the most part, I think that this book will appeal most to teenage girls, but it will also appeal to adults.
