The Strawberry Patch Pancake House
by Laurie Gilmore
Let me start by saying I do not usually enjoy contemporary romances, so take this review with a grain of salt—this genre just isn’t my usual cup of tea.
I read this book as part of my book club’s July pick, and while there were aspects I genuinely appreciated, it didn’t fully win me over.
I loved watching Archer’s journey into fatherhood—his emotions, fears, and hopes all felt incredibly genuine and heartfelt. His character was definitely a highlight for me. I also really enjoyed Iris’s growth, especially as she worked to break old patterns and build a life that felt more honest and fulfilling.
That said, the story felt a bit too long for my taste, and I found myself wishing it had been more tightly paced. I also struggled with how many assumptions Iris made—it’s one of my personal pet peeves, and it felt like she avoided honest conversations in favor of jumping to conclusions.
Overall, a sweet story with sincere moments, but not one that totally clicked for me—though fans of cozy, small-town romance may feel differently!
