One of the reasons I picked this one up was because of the "deadly competition" plotline. This, however, fell flat for me. The competitive element was boring and uninspired. Saved only by some of the political intrigue. Not sure if I'll bother with the second book. I also found the writing annoying at times. Moving from the prosaic to overly flowery with sentences like "smells like falling"...whatever that means 🤷‍♀️
