This is one of those books that I knew almost immediately that it was going to be one of my favorite reads ever. And I even knew it before I started reading it which is why I was so excited to start it, I jumped when my Libby finally got it in. And I'm so glad to say that it did not disappoint.
This book is phenomenal. Absolutely and totally phenomenal. I loved everything about it.
I fell in love with Roman and Iris and their banter in the beginning and the slow realization that Roman was already in love with her was perfect. And their letters even before Iris knew who he was were so heartfelt and beautiful. It killed me when she went off to the frontlines and they were separated but they still had those letters. And I loved watching her slowly fall in love with him both through the letters and in person even though she thought they were two different people. It was just so good.
And the war aspect was just as good. You could feel Iris's fear as she dealt with everything that being at the frontlines entails and her desire to help even though that's not what she's supposed to be there to do. I loved seeing her character develop through that experience and I liked that the war kept getting closer and closer just gradually. In the beginning, there were hints that this was a book about war but it wasn't until the ending that the war became the focal point of the story and I really liked that. It let us get to know the characters and the conflict before dropping us right into it.
And that ending is so good. I knew that it would end somehow with the war and her brother and I figured it would be a cliffhanger because there's a second book, but I did not predict what happened at all.
It was all so great and I can't wait for my hold to be ready on the next one.
