Graham McNeill has no issue picking up where Abnett left off with a sequel that works beautifully in tandem with the first book. The overall writing isn't as tight or engaging as Abnett's but that's a Warhammer trend one must swallow in the name of The Emperor and The Lore. The roles of the major players in the Horus Heresy and everything surrounding It and Him are clearly defined, tying up the loose ends of the first book and making it very, very clear that what we are about to bear witness to in the coming books is pure tragedy.
