Wonder by R.J. Palacio

5.0

Auggie Pullman really is a wonder. This book focuses on his experience going into fifth grade, and exploring what it is like to be in a real school rather than being homeschooled.

Despite this, readers are shown the POV of several other people in Auggie’s life. Personally, this was a great way to understand the “why” behind each characters action. It also made me cringe more when certain characters were being well, exactly who they are. Looking at the same story through different lenses gave so much depth to Palacio’s story. It created higher high’s and lower lows.

For being a YA novel, it had such a big message. Palacio carefully constructs what life is like for someone like Auggie that is born with a genetic mutation leaving him looking much different than anyone else. She doesn’t tip toe around how people would become frightened, and she goes into depths about how far people will go to dis include someone. But then she guides readers through a very natural arch of acceptance.

This book touched my soul, and if you haven’t read it… well… I suggest you do soon!
