This is historical fiction and is about a midwife during WWII being held as a prisoner in the concentration camps, birthing fellow prisoner's babies. She is later sent to care for Hitler's pregnant mistress, which I imagine is quite the responsibility for one person to hold and have held over them, knowing the fate of Hitler's child is in your hands. It was heartbreaking to read of the difficulties the prisoners faced in the camps and to learn how quickly babies were disposed of if they weren't born 'perfect'. The birthing process and all that it involves is very vividly described. The author is a formerly practicing midwife and really uses her knowledge to make you feel as though you're there in the room.
Overall I found the story to be interesting and educational, though it was a bit slow at times. This may be a hard read for anyone with triggers surrounding pregnancy, miscarriages, etc.
