ejrathke 's review for:
The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern
I have shockingly little to say about this, which is kind of a bad sign, I suppose.
By the end of the novel, I guess I just didn't care that much about it all. About the romance between the leads or even the continuation of the story in the hands of others.
The novel does a lot of things well, but it somehow manages to never make us care that much about what's happening. And part of it, for me, is maybe that it's hard for me to care about a man who is psychologically abusing an elderly man in order to steal his life's work from him so that he can be with a woman he's loved from afar for years.
Anyrate, the stakes just never seemed to be there. And even when the stakes were laid out clearly, I didn't really care that much about the characters.
I don't know. It's not a bad book but it's also not a good one.
