BookTok is lowering the bar for what is considered good fantasy writing.
This book has been lauded online ever since its release so, naturally, I wanted to see if it deserves the praise - it doesn't.
I don't enjoy saying this about any book but the writing is, at its best, juvenile and, at its worst, painful to read. The characters are in their 20s but have been written with the language, mental age and motivations of teenagers.
The central romance is downright insufferable and grounded in a cringeworthy lust that culminates in one of the longest and most gratuitous sex scenes I've ever had the misfortune to read.
If the world, history and magic system were described with the same fervor as Xaden's oral skills, the story would have benefitted immeasurably.
Ultimately, this is a prime example of why social media content creators should not be trusted. If you want fantasy recommendations, ask your local bookseller. I can guarantee very few will have this on their list.
